Rías Baixas (low estuaries) is the name given to the southern part of Galicia's Atlantic coast, where four major rivers meet the sea between the towns of Muros, to the north, and Baiona, to the south. It is an Atlantic landscape, with green forest that comes up to the shore, alternating with arable land and areas of coastal cliffs that open onto broad sandy beaches. The climate is much milder than in northern Galicia. The beach is inviting in spring and summer, while abundant autumn and winter rains make the landscape take on its deep, characteristic green.
This coast is one of Spain's most plentiful fishing grounds. This means that alongside the natural beauty of the area, we must also mention its delicious cuisine, based on high quality seafood.
The Pontevedra Estuary, almost 20 km long, runs from the mouth of the Lerez River to the Atlantic Ocean, where the islands of Ons and Onceta are located. There are many beaches with fine sand, all along the coast. There are many interesting places to visit alongside the estuary: the town of Sanxenxo with its beautiful beaches; Poio Monastery, which dates back to the 10th century; the village of Combarro, where you can see delightful (traditional raised grain sheds); the peaceful city of Pontevedra, provincial capital with an interesting history; and the Morrazo Peninsula with its stunning coastal landscapes.
